About Congregation
Kol Ami
Congregation Kol Ami builds on the traditions of
Judaism while respecting and welcoming everyone: lesbian,
gay, bisexual, straight, interfaith couples and our children.
Together Rabbi Denise L. Eger and Cantor Mark Saltzman create
a hamishe atmosphere, safe for spiritual nurturing and connection.
What distinguishes Congregation Kol Ami is embodied in our
name, "Voice of My People."
- We joyously seek the common ground between Judaism and
many rich and diverse identities our members hold.
- At the core of our Temple are the traditions of Judaism
and Jewish thought. Built on that strong foundation are
new layers of inclusion, respect and acceptance for a diversity
of contemporary ways of life.
- Here, the new and the traditional, the secular and the
spiritual, the present and the past, the realities of life
and the exploration of God are given room to reside together.
- Our unique congregation strives to serve God, Judaism
and our members from all Jewish backgrounds and perspectives
through:
- Worship Services and High Holy Day Services
- Jewish education- Adult education programs and religious
school for children.
- Social Action
- Innovative social and cultural programs, including the
Men of Kol Ami (MOKA) and the Women of Kol Ami.
- Life cycle ceremonies, weddings, funerals and other rites
and rituals officiated by the Rabbi and Cantor.
- New architecturally noted building designed by Josh
Schweitzer.
- Congregation Kol Ami is a member of the UAHC (Union
of American Hebrew Congregations - Reform Judaism) and
the World Congress of Gay and Lesbian Jewish organizations.
Our Mission
To be a progressive, Reform congregation rooted
in a rich Jewish tradition, with a commitment to social justice,
Israel and diversity that guides us in the present and transforms
our future.
Our Vision
- A welcoming and nurturing environment for Jews of diverse
backgrounds and lifestyles seeking enhanced Jewish observance,
worship, spirituality, appreciation and celebrating.
- A community engaged in Jewish experience, culture, social
activity, and education that incorporates feminist Jewish
theology, gender equality, and diverse sexual identities
in its theology and practice.
- A voice of conscience, reason and compassion which creates
a link between our spirituality and our commitment to social
justice.
Our Purpose
The purpose of the congregation is to provide an appropriate
means for religious worship and for the expression of the
ideals and faith of Judaism; to afford religious education
to the children of members of the Congregation; to afford
facilities usual in a Jewish congregation; and to support
worthy efforts for the betterment of humanity, with outreach
to the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual community.
